Softball Splits with #22 San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with #22 San Francisco State on Friday afternoon at CSUSB Softball Park.

CSUSB fell 7-1 in game one, before taking game two 10-6.

With the split, CSUSB moves to 25-25 overall on the season and 17-17 in the CCAA. They are now just one win away from punching their ticket to the CCAA Tournament.

Game 1 - San Francisco State 7, Cal State San Bernardino 1

The Coyotes struck first on a Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) RBI double in the top of the first inning, plating Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) to give the Yotes a 1-0 lead.

That would be the end of the Coyote offense in game one however, as the Gators struck for one in the third, five in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take a commanding 7-1 lead, which would hold up as the final score.

CSUSB scattered nine hits in the defeat, but left eight runners on base. Seniors Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Cailf.) and Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.) each had three hits, however the rest of the offense combined for just three themselves.

Senior Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) took the loss for CSUSB, allowing four earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.

Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 8, San Francisco State 3

The contest started as a pitcher's duel, with just three runs in the first six innings of the night cap. Goris opened the scoring again in the top of the second inning, this time on a solo home run to left, but San Francisco State answered back with a homer of their own in the bottom of the inning, knotting the score at 1-1. In the third, the Yotes capitalized on a Gator throwing error to go back in front 2-1.

Still 2-1 in the top of the seventh, the Coyotes broke the contest open with a six-spot to take a seven-run lead. Sophomore Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) started the rally by drawing a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk, followed by another RBI single from Goris.

Sacrifice flies from Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) and Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) sandwiched a two-run throwing error to cap CSUSB's six-run frame.

The Gators picked up a pair on a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be all the offense could muster, as CSUSB earned the win.

Goris and senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) each went 2-for-4 to pace the Yotes offense in game two of the doubleheader.

Blackmon rebounded from the game one defeat for a complete-game win, allowing just three earned on five hits with a pair of Ks.

The Coyotes and Gators will conclude their regular seasons with a doubleheader in San Francisco. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
