Box Score SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team fell 13-5 to Cal State Monterey Bay in 11 innings on Sunday afternoon in a CCAA contest at Fiscalini Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes are now 22-12 overall with a 14-10 record in CCAA play.
Cal State Monterey Bay hit a solo home run in the top of the second followed by a two-run double to make it 3-0.
Senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) led off the bottom of the second with a walk. He would score after advancing to second on a ground out, third via a passed ball, and scored via a balk.
CSUSB added another run after a single by junior Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.), making it 3-2 in favor of the Otters.
Monterey Bay would once again hit a solo home run in the top of the third to extend their lead to 4-2.
The Coyotes responded in the bottom of the third, leading off the inning with back-to-back singles by Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) and Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.). Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.) later doubled to cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Otters would hit an RBI double of their own in the top of the fifth to extend their lead once again to 5-3.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the ninth, when Solano and junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) both hit singles. On an 0-2 pitch with two outs, Ruiz came up clutch again, this time hitting a double down the left field line to tie it 5-5.
With one out in the top of the 10th, Monterey Bay hit into a line drive double play and CSUSB got out of the jam.
Monterey Bay would add eight runs in the top of the 11th inning; two three-run shots, and a two-run double to make it 13-5. They were able to close out the game with a one-two-three bottom of the eleventh.
Up next, the Coyotes head on the road for a four-game tilt against Chico State starting on Friday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
