SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team swept their doubleheader against the Biola University Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at the CSUSB Softball Park.
The Coyotes prevailed 2-0 in game one and 3-2 in extra innings in the second game.
With the sweep, the Coyotes are now 17-17 and 9-11 in CCAA play.
Game 1: CSUSB 2, Biola 0
In the bottom of the first, senior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) launched an opposite-field home run to right, giving the Yotes a 1-0 lead.
The Coyotes had another opportunity in the bottom of the second, loading the bases with one out but could not capitalize.
CSUSB loaded the bases again in the third after Emilie Lapena (Buena Park, Calif.) walked, followed by hits from Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) and Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.). This time, they scored a run on a sacrifice fly by Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.), extending their lead to 2-0.
Biola threatened in both the fifth and seventh innings, placing two runners on base each time, but the Coyotes were able to close out the game.
In the circle, senior Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) threw a complete-game shutout, marking her first of the season.
Game 2: CSUSB 3, Biola 2
CSUSB struck first in the bottom of the first after a sacrifice fly by Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.), scoring Hebreo, who led off the inning with a single.
In the top of the third, Biola took the lead with a two-run homer to left field.
The Coyotes had a chance in the bottom of the sixth, with runners on first and second, but Biola responded with two key consecutive strikeouts to escape the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second and third on the next two outs.
With two outs, junior Annamaria Nuno (Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit a pinch-hit single to center field, tying the game. CSUSB was then retired on the next play, sending the game into extra innings.
After a one-two-three top of the eighth, CSUSB responded with a hit from senior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) and a walk by Tosi. In the following at-bat, Goris hit a walk-off single down the left-field line to secure the win.
Senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) turned in a dazzling performance for the Yotes in the circle. She allowed no earned runs in eight innings pitched, and allowed only five hits.
Up next, the Coyotes head up north to Chico State for a four-game series starting on Friday. First pitch of game one is set for 1 p.m.
