SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball season came to a close on March 6 and was the most successful season in recent years.
Despite a slow start with a 3-10 record, the Coyotes finished strong, ending with a 16-12 and winning 13 of their last 14 regular season games. This impressive run helped them secure the No. 4 seed in the CCAA Tournament, though they were eliminated in the quarterfinals by Sonoma State.
The team also posted a 15-7 record in conference play, their best since the 2010-11 season, marking the most successful year of head coach Casandra Renno's tenure.
During the season, two Coyotes reached the milestone of 1,000 career points. Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit the mark on February 13 against Cal State San Marcos, and Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) followed on February 22 against San Francisco State. Jackson led the team with 12.8 points per game and also topped the CCAA with 4.5 assists per game. Morris, who finished second on the team with 12.1 points per game, also led the Coyotes with 7.9 rebounds per game, ranking fifth in the CCAA.
In addition, senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) became the program's all-time leader in blocked shots. She also set a career high with 61 blocks, which led the CCAA, which brought her career total to 170.
Four Coyotes earned All-CCAA honors this season. Jackson and Morris were named to the All-CCAA First Team, while Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) and Dufresne received All-CCAA Honorable Mention recognition.
"This year was filled with our student-athletes accomplishing personal accolades and finishing as a team better than last year," said Renno. "We are continuing to grow and build something special here in the Inland Empire. We still aren't satisfied - we are still hungry and we still want more."
