SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino baseball team swept their doubleheader against the Sonoma State Seawolves on Sunday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes won 17-7 in game one, before walking off with a 6-5 win in game two.
With the pair of wins, the Coyotes are now 19-7 overall with a 11-5 record in CCAA play.
Game 1: CSUSB 17, Sonoma State 7
CSUSB got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run homer by graduate student Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) that cleared the scoreboard in right field.
Sonoma State answered with a solo home run in the top of the second, but junior Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.) hit a solo shot of his own, giving the Yotes a 3-1 lead.
The game remained tied at 3-1 until the top of the fifth, when the Seawolves evened the score. However, CSUSB took control in the sixth with two more runs, highlighted by an RBI double from sophomore Eric Aguayo (Riverside, Calif.), who finished the game with a team-high four hits.
The Coyotes exploded for six runs in both the seventh and eighth innings. Aguayo, Luna, senior Matt Gonzales (Glendora, Calif.), and junior Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) each drove in a run during the seventh inning, and Tank Rodriguez (Fontana, Calif.) and Adrian Hinojosa, Jr. (Chula Vista, Calif.) were key contributors in the eighth.
Sonoma State added two runs in the eighth off back-to-back homers and two more in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to overcome CSUSB's lead.
Game 2: CSUSB 6, Sonoma State 5
Sonoma State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the third.
CSUSB responded in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer by Jeremy Giesegh (Upland, Calif.) to tie the game at 2-2.
The Seawolves retook the lead in the top of the fifth with a two-run homer, making it 4-2.
CSUSB answered with back-to-back homers from Hinojosa and Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
Sonoma State regained the lead with an RBI single to make it 5-4. Despite having two runners on base in the top of the seventh, they were unable to add to their lead.
With CSUSB down to its final out, Dominguez was hit by a pitch, followed by a single from junior Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.). Senior Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) then drew a walk to load the bases. Finally, senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, tying the game at 5-5.
On the next at-bat, Giesegh delivered a walk-off single to center field, completing the sweep for CSUSB.
Up next, the Coyotes head back to the road for a four-game series at Cal State East Bay starting on Friday. First pitch in Hayward is set for 3 p.m.
