SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino opened a four-game series against Regis University by falling 12-10 Friday evening at Fiscalini Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes move to 2-2 on the young season.
Cal State San Bernardino looked sharp in the early going, scoring one run in each the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. The Yotes got on the board first on a Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, followed in the second by a Dom Dominguez (Victorville, Calif.) solo home run.
Regis got one back in the top of the fifth, but the Yotes responded with three in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-1 advantage. Adrian Hinojosa Jr. (Chula Vista, Calif.) opened the scoring in the inning with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, followed by a Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) RBI single and a Dominguez RBI groundout to stretch the lead to four.Â
Regis took advantage of a pair of Coyote errors in the top of the sixth to score nine runs and take a 10-5 lead. Of the nine runs, only two were earned in the inning.
Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) got one run back for the Yotes in the bottom of the sixth with a base hit to left, plating Wyatt Hall (Port Angeles, Wash.) from second, cutting the deficit to 10-6.
The Rangers hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to push their advantage back to five, but the Coyotes responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth, coming on a Vanneste RBI fielder's choice and another Ruiz sacrifice fly to left.
Regis added an insurance marker in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to 12-8, but the Yotes refused to go down quietly in the ninth. They got a pair of base runners with nobody out, and scored twice on sacrifice flies from junior Greg Luna (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Benji Solano (Chula Vista, Calif.), but that was as close as they would get as the Rangers closed out the win.
Mejia was the lone Coyote with multiple hits in the defeat, going 2-for-3 with one run scored and one run batted in. Vanneste, Ruiz, and Dominguez all had a pair of runs batted in, while senior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) crossed home plate three times.
The teams will play games two and three of their four-game series on Saturday at Fiscalini Field. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
