SEASIDE, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team suffered a pair of losses at the hands of Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUSB fell 3-1 in the first contest of the day, before dropping a 9-8 extra inning decision in game two.
With the split, CSUSB moves to 9-9 overall on the season and 3-3 in CCAA play.
Game 1 - Cal State Monterey Bay 3, Cal State San Bernardino 1
The Otters did all of their damage offensively in the bottom of the first inning, with a pair of bases loaded walks and a sacrifice fly to center.
In the top of the second, the Yotes got one back thanks to a bases loaded walk from senior
Jonessa Hebreo (San Diego, Calif.), plating
Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) from third base.
Senior
Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) settled in in a big way after the first inning, allowing just one hit over five scoreless innings, but the Coyote offense could not get her any more run support and the Otters came out on top.Â
Junior
Alex Hooper (Auburn, Calif.) recorded two of CSUSB's five hits to lead the way offensively in the first half of the doubleheader.
Game 2 - Cal State Monterey Bay 9, Cal State San Bernardino 8 (8 Innings)
The Yotes got off to a strong start in game two, plating three runs in the top of the first to take an early advantage. Senior
Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) got the offense going with an RBI double to score CSUSB's run, and she would come around to score on a two-run single from Hooper.
Cal State Monterey Bay answered with eight unanswered runs, including five in the bottom of the first, to take an 8-3 lead after four, but Marschall and Hooper came up big again for the Coyotes in the top of the fifth. Marschall recorded an RBI single in the frame, followed by a two-run double from Hooper for her third and fourth RBIs of the contest.
In the sixth, a two-run single from senior
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) leveled the score, as Hebreo and freshman
Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) scored on the play.
The Coyote offense could not plate the ghost runner in the top of the eighth, and Monterey Bay capitalized with a game-winning double in the bottom of the inning to walk off the Yotes.
Tosi, Hooper, and Marschall all paced the Coyotes with two hits apiece in the extra-inning defeat.
The loss was credited to senior
Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) despite a strong relief outing, throwing 4+ innings and allowing just one run on five hits.
The Coyotes and Otters will wrap up their series on Saturday when they face off for games three and four of the four-game set at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch in game one is slated for 11 a.m.
