SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team suffered a 76-55 loss to Cal State East Bay in CCAA action Thursday evening at Coussoulis Arena.
With the defeat, the Coyotes dip to 18-10 overall and 11-8 in the CCAA.Â
Cal State East Bay held a six-point advantage at halftime, outscoring the hosts 31-25 in the opening 20 minutes despite a game-high 10 points from senior Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.). Welp went 3-for-5 (60.0 percent) from the floor in the half, but the rest of the team combined to shoot just 4-of-17 (23.5 percent).
The second half was all Pioneers, as the visitors pulled away and shut down the already struggling CSUSB offense. Cal State East Bay opened the half on a 16-4 run, and stretched their lead to as many as 28 points late in the contest, while holding CSUSB to 12-of-38 (31.6 percent) shooting.
Welp was a bright spot on a tough evening for the Coyotes, as he posted 20 points for just the second time this season, and his fifth consecutive game scoring in double figures. He blocked seven Cal State East Bay shots, and pulled down eight rebounds in the loss. Senior Andrew Henderson was the only other Coyote in double figures, finishing a rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will host San Francisco State on Saturday for Senior Day at Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
