SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team fell to the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks 91-81 on Saturday afternoon in CCAA play at Coussoulis Arena.
With the loss, the Coyotes drop to 16-7 overall and 9-5 in CCAA play.
CSUSB opened strong with a 6-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from senior Charlie Henderson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and an and-one layup by senior Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.). However, Humboldt quickly responded with a dominant 21-8 run over the next five and a half minutes, taking a 21-14 lead.
The Coyotes chipped away at Humboldt's lead, first with a three-pointer from graduate student Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.), followed by a layup from senior Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.), who finished with a game-high 28 points.
Despite CSUSB's efforts, Humboldt maintained the lead, pushing it to 40-30. The Coyotes cut the deficit to 42-39 by halftime, closing the half on a 9-2 run, with key contributions from Andrew Henderson, Oliver, and Guillory.
Humboldt extended its lead to 60-47 with 15:37 remaining, but CSUSB fought back with a 7-0 run, led by Oliver. After a back-and-forth battle, the Lumberjacks held a 76-69 advantage. The Coyotes responded, cutting the lead to 76-74 after Andrew Henderson drew a foul and converted one of two free throws. Despite a few more chances to cut or take the lead, Humboldt's offense proved too strong, as they finished the game on a 15-6 run.
Humboldt shot 34-for-54 (63.0 percent) from the field, including 12-for-22 (54.5 percent) from three-point range, marking their best shooting performance of the season. CSUSB shot 30-for-60 (50 percent) from the field, including 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from beyond the arc.
Next, CSUSB travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday. Tip-off in Carson is set for 5:30 p.m.
