COSTA MESA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team suffered an 87-66 defeat at the hands of #7 Point Loma Nazarene University Saturday afternoon at the Freed Center for Leadership and Service.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 2-3 overall on the season.
The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes, and four points from Coyote redshirt senior Walter Hamilton (Lake Center, Miss.) saw the contest tied at 6-6 just under four minutes in. Point Loma however responded with a 10-0 run to go up 16-6, and never trailed again the rest of the afternoon.
The Sea Lions led by as many as 12 points in the first half, but the Yotes had closed the gap to six at 42-36 by halftime. Senior Javon Ervin (Tacoma, Wash.) led the Yotes with eight points and three assists off the bench in the first half, while sophomore Aidan Fowler (San Clemente, Calif.) posted seven points.
Point Loma ran away with the contest in the second half, outpacing the Coyotes 45-30. The Yotes were held to just 34.4 percent (11-for-32) shooting in the half, despite going 4-for-9 (44.4 percent) from beyond the arc. Amound Anderson II (Gardena, Calif.) and Gavin Davis (Carson, Calif.) each scored six in the second half to pace the Coyotes.
Three Yotes hit double figures for CSUSB in the defeat, led by Fowler with 11 points. Anderson and Hamilton each had 10, while Davis poured in nine points with a team-high five boards.
The Coyotes will be back in action next Saturday, facing Concordia University Irvine on the road at CU Arena. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m.
