SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team opened Homecoming weekend with a 3-1 win over San Francisco State Friday evening in a CCAA contest on Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-22, 17-25, 25-18, and 25-15.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in the CCAA.
The Yotes took set number one behind a balanced scoring attack. San Francisco State led in the early going at 7-5, but the hosts went on an 11-6 burst to go up by three at 16-13 and never trailed again. Coyote junior Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.) notched a game-high six kills in the set, while senior Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.) had a pair of service aces to help the Yotes take the first set.
San Francisco State controlled much of the second set, going wire-to-wire to level the match. The Coyotes hit only .114 in the set, with Pedersen recording six of CSUSB's 11 kills.
CSUSB set the tone early in set three, running out to a 7-2 lead, but the Gators responded with a run of their own to take an 11-9 advantage. The Coyotes took all the momentum from there though, scoring 15 of the next 21 points to take a 2-1 edge. Pedersen again dominated the play in the set, with eight kills and a .500 attack percentage to help the Yotes regain the lead.
The Coyotes left no doubt in the fourth and final set, never trailing and only tied at 0-0 and 3-3 en route to a lopsided fourth set victory. The hosts had 13 kills in the set with only one attack error for a .444 attack percentage. Redshirt freshman Sarai Ross (Beaumont, Calif.) had a team-high four kills in the set to pace the Coyotes.
For the match, Pedersen was the leading player offensively, posting 22 kills and a .320 attack percentage. She also had a double-double with 18 digs, tied with libero Jayden Chornomud (Canyon Lake, Calif.) for the game-high. Ross and sophomore Kisa Sagiao (San Diego, Calif.) each had eight kills in the victory.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will turn around quickly to play their Homecoming game on Saturday evening against Cal State San Marcos. First serve is slated for 5 p.m.
