Women's Basketball Bested by Cal Poly Humboldt

ARCATA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to Cal Poly Humboldt by a final score of 76-67 Thursday evening in CCAA action at at Lumberjack Arena.

With the defeat, the Coyotes' record drops to 3-9, with a 2-5 mark in CCAA play.

The game started slowly for the Coyotes, as the Lumberjacks surged to a 10-0 lead in the first three and a half minutes. Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) led the Coyotes in the first quarter with five points. CSUSB trailed 28-12 at the end of the opening period.

The second quarter began more favorably for the Coyotes, who went on a 13-5 run, capped by two three-pointers from junior Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.). CSUSB went into the break trailing 43-30.

The third quarter was back and forth, with CSUSB taking an 18-16 advantage in the quarter to cut Humboldt's lead to 11 points. Graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) scored nine of her game-high 21 points during the third frame.

The fourth quarter began slowly for CSUSB as Humboldt opened with a 7-0 run. However, the Coyotes responded with a 19-7 run, bringing the score to 73-67 with 22 seconds remaining after an and-one layup by freshman Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.). She would also lead the team with seven rebounds and four steals. Despite the late push, Humboldt hit several free throws down the stretch to extend their lead to 76-67, the final score.

Despite the loss, CSUSB tied a season-low in turnovers (10) and set a season-high in steals (15). The Coyotes also set a new season high in three-pointers (11), with Jackson and Saidoff each hitting four treys.

Next up, the Coyotes will travel to Chico State for a game on Saturday, with tip-off scheduled for 1 p.m.
