SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #8 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team was defeated 65-62 by Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon in CCAA action at Coussoulis Arena.
With the defeat, the Coyotes dip to 11-4 overall on the season and 4-2 in the CCAA.
Prior to the game, Cal State San Bernardino celebrated its 2024 West Regional Championship by unveiling a banner in the rafters of Coussoulis Arena. Jalen Flanagan and LeAndrew Knight, members of the championship team who graduated after the season, both returned for the banner unveiling ceremony, where they were joined by their former teammates and current Coyotes Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.), Jordan Jones (Macon, Ga.), Kailen Rains (San Diego, Calif.), and Sam Ibeh (Toronto, Ontario).
Cal State Dominguez Hills controlled the play in the opening 20 minutes, and took a 10-point lead to the locker room at 38-28. The Toros led by as many as 16 midway through the half, but a 6-0 Yote run late in the frame helped the Yotes begin to chisel away at their deficit. CSUSB senior guard Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.) led the Coyotes with eight first half points.
A 14-3 run to open the second half, capped by a made layup by Guillory, helped the Yotes take their very first lead of the afternoon at 41-40.Â
The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes, but a 7-0 run gave the Coyotes a 56-49 lead with 8:18 to play that they would not relinquish until the final minute of the contest.Â
Graduate student Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.) hit a jump shot to put the Yotes ahead 62-56 with 3:43 to go, but it would be the final points of the game for CSUSB, as Dominguez Hills scored the final nine points of the game to secure the comeback win.
Senior Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.) got an open look for three in the waning seconds of the contest, but his bid was off the mark and the horn sounded.
Oliver finished as the leading scorer for the Coyotes, with 17 points and three rebounds in the defeat. Henderson looked sharp with a 16-point, 13-rebound double-double, while Guillory dropped 12 points.
Next up for the Yotes, they will return to make the long trip north to Cal Poly Humboldt for a Thursday evening CCAA contest. Tip-off from Arcata is slated for 7:30 p.m.
