Men's Basketball Falls on Heartbreaker at the Horn

ARCATA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team fell to the Cal Poly Humboldt Lumberjacks 80-77 Thursday evening at Lumberjack Arena.

With the loss, the Coyotes' record drops to 11-5 overall and 4-3 in CCAA play.

CSUSB trailed early, with Cal Poly Humboldt building a lead of as many as nine points during the first half. However, the Coyotes remained competitive. Graduate student Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.) and senior Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.) each scored in double figures in the first half, shooting a combined 11-for-13. They finished the game with 26 and 23 points, respectively.

The second half began with a 6-0 CSUSB run, led by Welp and Oliver, which tied the game at 42. However, Humboldt regained control and led by double digits for much of the half.

Despite trailing 74-61 with 4:37 remaining, CSUSB mounted a massive comeback. Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.) started the run with a layup, and the Coyotes eventually took a 77-76 lead with 56 seconds left, thanks to a putback layup by graduate student Josh Adoh (Bellflower, Calif.). After a defensive stop, CSUSB had a chance to take the lead at the free-throw line but could only convert one of two attempts, tying the game at 77 with five seconds to go.

In heartbreaking fashion, Cal Poly Humboldt hit a 28-foot three-pointer that bounced around the rim before finally falling as time expired to give them the win.

Welp finished the contest with his second double-double of the game with 23 points and a game-high 13 boards. It is his second double-double in three games.

Next up, CSUSB travels to Chico State for a CCAA game on Saturday. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
