Women's Basketball Takes Down Cal State East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team defeated the Cal State East Bay Pioneers Saturday afternoon 73-56 in CCAA play at Pioneer Gymnasium.

With the win, the Coyotes pick up their fourth consecutive win and are now 7-10 with a 6-6 record in CCAA play.

CSUSB started strong, shooting 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from the field in the first 10 minutes. Graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) scored eight of the team's first 12 points. By the end of the first quarter, CSUSB led 24-15. Senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) recorded four of her five blocks in the first quarter.

The Coyotes continued their success into the second quarter, extending their lead to 34-17 with 7:32 left in the half after a pair of free throws by Dufresne. However, Cal State East Bay responded with a 12-4 run to close the quarter, making it 38-29 in favor of the Yotes. CSUSB shot 16-for-30 (53.3 percent) in the first half.

After a bit of back-and-forth to start the third quarter, CSUSB took control midway through the period. Graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.) scored six of her 14 points in the third, tying for the game-high along with Morris. The Yotes stretched their lead to 58-40 after a pair of three-pointers by freshman Aariah Roa (Los Angeles, Calif.), both assisted by Jackson, who set a new season high with eight assists.

CSUSB maintained its dominance in the fourth quarter. Senior Rae McRae (Sacramento, Calif.), who tied a season-high in both points (six) and rebounds (five), scored two baskets in the final period.

For the game, CSUSB shot 44.1 percent, which is the fourth time this season they have shot at least 44 percent from the field and the third time in the last four games. Their defense was also strong, forcing a season-high 25 turnovers. Additionally, the Coyotes demonstrated strong ball movement, setting a new season-high with 17 assists, while eight players scored at least six points each.

Up next, CSUSB travels back home to face Chico State on Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 pm.
