HAYWARD, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team defeated the Cal State East Bay Pioneers Saturday afternoon in CCAA action at Pioneer Gymnasium by a score of 84-72.
With the win, the Coyotes improve to 15-6 with a 8-4 record in CCAA play.
CSUSB started strong with a 6-0 run, led by Charlie Henderson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) and Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.). The Coyotes were red-hot in the first half, shooting 16-of-25 (64 percent) from the field. Seniors Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.) and Charlie Henderson led the way, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. CSUSB took a 45-32 lead into halftime, having led by as many as 20 points, and dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Pioneers 19-11.
In the second half, CSUSB maintained their momentum, reaching their largest lead at 72-49 after a pair of free throws from senior Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) with 7:09 left. Guillory finished 7-for-7 from the line, and as a team, CSUSB shot 29-of-35 (82.9 percent) from the free-throw line, including 20-of-23 (87.0 percent) in the second half. After Guillory's free throws, Cal State East Bay went on a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 72-58, but CSUSB held on, icing the game with key free throws.
The Coyotes never trailed and finished with an 11-rebound advantage, marking their fifth game this season with a double-digit rebound margin. Five players finished in double figures, led by Andrew Henderson's 26. Andrew Henderson and Welp would also record double-doubles as they pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Jordan Jones (Macon, Ga.) and Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.) added nine and eight points, respectively as well.
Up next, CSUSB travels back home to face Chico State on Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm.
