SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #8 California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team suffered a straight-sets defeat at the hands of #12 Chaminade University Saturday evening in the final match of the Yotes Classic Showcase at
Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-23.
With the defeat, CSUSB finishes the tournament with a regular season record of 2-2 overall.
The Coyotes had an impressive .286 hitting percentage with 13 kills in the opening set, but were simply out-dueled. Chaminade hit .314 with 15 kills and four service aces to cruise past the Yotes in the opener. Coyote senior
Ashley Robinson (Tucson, Ariz.) had six kills on 11 swings in the set with only one error, but it was not enough to stop the red-hot Chaminade offense.
The Silverswords could not be slowed down in the second set either. They hit a dazzling .500 with 17 kills and just one error on 32 attempts to down the Yotes, who hit .267 in the set. Senior
Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.) led CSUSB with four kills in the second.
The third and ultimately final set was tighter than the first two, but despite the Yotes leading 23-22 in the extremely late stages, the Silverswords won the final three points to secure the road sweep. Robinson turned in six kills in the third for the second time in the match.
Robinson finished as the contest's offensive leader, notching 15 kills and a .324 attack percentage. She also contributed seven digs and a pair of blocks. At the match's end, she was named to the All-Tournament Team. The full All-Tournament Team can be found below.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will head north to play in the three-day Central Washington Invitational, which will begin on Thursday with a 2 p.m. matchup against Western Washington.
