SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team saw its 2024 season come to a close on Wednesday afternoon, falling to Cal State East Bay 3-2 in the single-elimination portion of the CCAA Tournament.
With the defeat, the Coyotes end their season with an overall record of 28-20.
Cal State East Bay scored once in the top of the first and twice in the top of the third to claim an early 3-0 lead.
The Coyotes struggled for offense until the top of the sixth inning, when they exploded for two runs on four hits to draw within one at 3-2.
After a lead-off double from Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) and base hit from Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.), CCAA Player of the Year Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) drove in CSUSB's first run with a base hit through the left side.
Three batters later, freshman Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) drove in the second Coyote run on a ground out to shortstop, cutting the deficit to 3-2. The Yotes would, however, end up stranding runners on second and third in the frame.
The Yotes were unable to get the bats going again in the bottom of the seventh, going down 1-2-3 to close out their season.
Galliano and Tosi each went 2-for-3 with a double to pace the Coyotes offensively. The rest of the team combined for just two hits.
Senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) took the loss on the hill for the Coyotes. She allowed one earned run over 2.1 innings on three hits in the defeat. Senior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.) dazzled in relief for CSUSB, throwing 4.2 shutout innings with a strikeout.
