ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team swept Sonoma State University on Saturday afternoon to take three of four from the Seawolves in a CCAA doubleheader at the Seawolf Softball Field.
San Bernardino shutout Sonoma State 2-0 in the first game of the day, followed by an 8-2 win in game two.
With the sweep, the Coyotes move to 19-13 overall and 13-8 in CCAA action.
Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 2, Sonoma State 0
CSUSB picked up its second consecutive shutout victory in the first game of the day, behind a strong pitching performance from senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.). She threw a complete game, allowing no runs on nine hits with three strikeouts en route to the win.
The only offense for Cal State San Bernardino came on one swing in the top of the sixth, when senior Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) delivered a two-run single up the middle, plating pinch runners Natalie Bednarz (Temecula, Calif.) and Shaylee Zaitz (Peoria, Ariz.) for the game's only runs.
Senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) recorded CSUSB's lone multi-hit game in game one, going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 8, Sonoma State 3
The Coyotes got on the board right away, posting a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead before the Seawolves grabbed their bats. Both runs came on a two-run single from junior Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.).
The Yotes added another run in the second on an Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) RBI single to go ahead 3-0.
CSUSB put the game out of reach by posting three runs in the top of the fourth to take a six-run advantage. Carlos and Galliano scored San Bernardino's first two runs of the frame on a pair of wild pitches, before Goris notched her third RBI of the game on a base hit up the middle.
After Sonoma State got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, Cal State San Bernardino capped its offense with two more in the top of the fifth. Junior Diggy Olson (Riverside, Calif.) and Galliano each recorded RBI singles in the frame.
Sonoma State scored single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to give the game its final score of 8-3.
Carlos led the way offensively for CSUSB, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and a double. Goris and Lapeña each went 3-for-4 in the victory.
The win went to junior Samantha Vargas (Grand Terrace, Calif.), who threw a complete game with five strikeouts for her second win of the weekend.
CSUSB will return to action on Tuesday with a rescheduled doubleheader against Hawaii Pacific University at home. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
