SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay at CSUSB Softball Park.
CSUSB was stopped short by a final score of 7-2 in game one, before rebounding to win 14-6 in five innings in game two.
With the split, the Coyotes move to 23-17 overall on the season, and 15-12 in CCAA play.
Game 1 - Cal State Monterey Bay 7, Cal State San Bernardino 2
The Coyotes ran into a stellar pitching performance by Monterey Bay's Mackenzie Willis. The Coyotes were held hitless until a one-out double from junior
Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) in the bottom of the sixth inning, after the Otters had already built up a 7-0 lead.
CSUSB finally broke the ice with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior
Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) and junior Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) each recorded RBI singles in the inning, but the Yotes could only muster a pair of runs and fell 7-2.
Senior
Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) was credited with the loss in the circle for CSUSB. She allowed six earned over 4.1 innings in the defeat.
The Coyotes scattered five hits in the loss, all coming in the final two innings of the contest. No Yotes had multiple hits, but Goris and catcher
Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) each notched a double.
Game 2 - Cal State San Bernardino 14, Cal State Monterey Bay 6 (5 Innings)
The Coyote bats came to life in game two, as Cal State San Bernardino needed only five innings to get the job done.
Monterey Bay crossed home plate three times in the top of the first to take the early lead, but CSUSB quickly answered right back to tie the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the frame. Goris did the honors for the Coyotes, belting a three-run homer over the left center field fence to knot the score.
The Otters responded with three more runs in the top of the second. San Bernardino got one back on a Galliano RBI base hit up the middle to make the score 6-4.
CSUSB flipped the contest on its head by posting five runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-6 lead. Sophomore
Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) started the rally with a bases loaded walk, before two runs crossed home on an error by the Monterey Bay pitcher. The Yotes completed the frame with a two-run single from Galliano to pull into the driver's seat.
In the bottom of the fourth, Goris provided some insurance with a lead-off solo homer to straightaway center, before a pair of runs scored on back-to-back Otter miscues to give CSUSB a 12-6 lead.
The Yotes closed out the victory with RBI singles from Goris and junior
Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) in the bottom of the fifth.
Goris had a massive contest at the dish, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored, five runs batted in, and two long balls. Galliano and junior
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) each also recorded three hits for CSUSB, while Marschall went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and the walk-off single.
Junior
Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) got the win in the circle for the Coyotes after a masterful relief outing. She tossed 3.2 no-hit innings, allowing just one baserunner on a walk with one strikeout to improve to 4-3 overall on the season.
The teams will play games three and four of their weekend series on Saturday afternoon at the CSUSB Softball Park. First pitch in game one is slated for 12 p.m.
