SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team dropped both ends of a CCAA doubleheader with #24 Cal State San Marcos on Saturday at the CSUSB Softball Park.
San Marcos dropped game one by a final of 5-3 in game one, before falling 10-2 in six innings in game two.
With the defeats, the Coyotes move to 22-16 overall and 14-11 in the CCAA.
Game 1 - #24 Cal State San Marcos 5, Cal State San Bernardino 3
Cal State San Marcos drew first blood on a leadoff home run in the top of the first, and stretched their lead to 2-0 with a single run in the top of the fourth.
CSUSB got on the board in the bottom of the fourth when sophomore Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) connected for a solo home run over the left field fence. The long ball was Escujuri's third of the season.
San Marcos got the run right back in the top of the fifth with a solo shot of their own to make it 3-1.Â
The Yotes got one back in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch hit RBI fielder's choice from junior Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), pulling to within one at 3-2.
Cal State San Marcos delivered what would prove to be the dagger with a two-out two-run homer in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 5-2.
The Coyotes threatened in the bottom of the seventh, twice bringing the tying run to the plate, but could only bring home one run on a sacrifice fly from junior Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.).
Senior Natalie Carlos (Garden Grove, Calif.) took the loss in the circle for CSUSB. She threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Senior Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) led the way offensively for the Coyotes, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Escujuri went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI in the defeat.
Game 2 - #24 Cal State San Marcos 10, Cal State San Bernardino 2 (6 Innings)
The Cougars plated three runs in the top of the first to take an early lead, before CSUSB responded with a run in the bottom of the second. Escujuri contributed an RBI double to left field in the inning.
San Marcos scored their fourth run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth to take a 4-1 advantage, but CSUSB got it back right in the bottom of the inning. With runners on the corners, sophomore catcher Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) delivered a base hit to center field to draw the Coyotes to within two.
Cal State San Marcos notched a run in the top of the fifth and five in the top of the sixth to put the contest out of reach at 10-2.
Escujuri and senior Hayden Greene (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) each notched a team-high two hits in the defeat for the Coyotes. Greene scored both of CSUSB's runs in the contest.
Of the 10 runs scored by San Marcos in game two, only five runs were earned.
The Yotes will continue their homestand on Friday when they begin a four-game set against Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday at the CSUSB Softball Park. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
