Game 1 - Cal State San Bernardino 7, Cal State Dominguez Hills 6
Cal State Dominguez Hills scored the first two runs of the game, before CSUSB got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on a Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the fifth, Dominguez Hills stretched their lead to 4-1 with a pair of runs, but CSUSB answered again with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Giovanni Del Negro (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) belted a solo homer over the left center field wall, followed by an RBI groundout from Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) to make the score 4-3.
In the top of the eighth, the Yotes took their first lead of the day by posting four runs to take a 7-4 advantage. The Coyotes tied the score on a Dominguez Hills throwing error, before taking the lead on a Jake Borst (Imperial Beach, Calif.) RBI sacrifice fly. They tacked onto their lead with a Tyler Vanneste (Warman, Saskatchewan) two-run single through the right side.
In the bottom of the frame, Dominguez Hills got a pair of runs back to make the score 7-6, but could get no closer. After the Toros got a pair of runs on base in the bottom of the ninth, the Yotes went to closer John Pfeffer (Riverside, Calif.), who got the final out to secure the save.
Del Negro, Borst, and senior shortstop Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) each recorded a pair of hits for San Bernardino.
Junior Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.) picked up the victory on the hill for the Yotes. He allowed just one hit in 2.2 innings pitched to earn his second win of the year.
Game 2 - Cal State Dominguez Hills 4, Cal State San Bernardino 3
The Coyotes plated three runs in the top of the first in game two, but that would be all the offense they would get in the game two defeat.Â
Del Negro opened the scoring on a Del Negro RBI double down the left field line, before Jacob Mejia (Palm Desert, Calif.) stretched the lead to three on an RBI groundout to short. The third run scored on a throwing error on the same play.
The Toros got a run in the bottom of the first, another in the bottom of the third, and a pair in the bottom of the fourth to rally for the third one-run win of the series.
Shedlock and senior Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) each had a pair of hits for the Coyotes. The duo combined for four of CSUSB's six hits in the defeat.
The loss went to sophomore Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.), who allowed four earned runs on four hits over five innings in the loss. He struck out three Toros.
The teams will wrap up their four-game set on Sunday afternoon with a 12 p.m. first pitch at Toro Field.
