SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's track & field team kicked off the Hornet Invitational Friday afternoon at Hornet Stadium on the campus of Sacramento State.
Junior Elizabeth Rushing (Oakdale, Calif.) opened the day by winning her heat in the hammer throw. She placed 11th overall with a heave of 47.38 meters, a personal best.
In the 3,000m steeplechase, Jordan Dennert (San Bernardino, Calif.) had a top-10 finish for the Coyotes, finishing in ninth with a time of 11:53.66. Not far behind was junior Caty Gaynor (Claremont, Calif.), who placed 11th with a PR of 12:01.78.
The top three CSUSB finishers in the 200 meter dash all set PRs for the Coyotes, led by a dazzling performance from junior Hailey Hunt (Winnetka, Calif.). In an event littered with Division I competition, Hunt finished in second place in the 137-runner field with a PR of 23.81 seconds. It was the second fastest time in CSUSB women's track & field history in the event. Graduate student Alexandra Ackerman (Lake Elsinore, Calif.) also impressed in the event with an 11th place finish and a time of 24.28 seconds, while freshman Coryssa Hope (Riverside, Calif.) placed 44th with a time of 25.24 seconds.
Closing out the afternoon was a quartet of Coyotes in the 3,000 meter run. Leading the way was graduate student Alexis Wallace (Orangevale, Calif.), who placed 22nd at 10:21.20, while junior Helena Valdez (Riverside, Calif.) was 36th at 10:45.82. Rounding out the runners were a pair of PRs, from junior Maria Rojas (Riverside, Calif.) at 11:31.26 and freshman Ximena Torres (Moreno Valley, Calif.) at 11:43.42.
The Yotes will wrap up the Hornet Invitational on Saturday. The first events of the day are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
