#4 Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Central Washington

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #4 California State University San Bernardino baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Central Washington University at Fiscalini Field on Friday afternoon.

San Bernardino won game one 6-3, before falling 3-0 in game two. With the split, the Coyotes move to 4-2 overall on the young season.

Game 1 - #4 Cal State San Bernardino 6, Central Washington 3

The Coyotes earned their third come-from-behind victory of the young season in game one, evening the series score at 1-1.

Central Washington got on the board first on an unearned run in the top of the first, but the lead was short-lived as the Yotes answered with a pair in the bottom of the frame. Senior Garrett Macias (Iwakuni, Japan) recorded an RBI with a bases loaded walk to even the score at 1-1, before CSUSB's second run came in on a double play ball.

Another unearned Wildcat run knotted the score at 2-2 in the top of the third, but San Bernardino took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs. Daniel Garcia Jr. (San Bernardino, Calif.) notched an RBI fielder's choice to give the Coyotes the advantage, before scoring on a Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2.

Garcia recorded an RBI single and Daryl Ruiz (Corona, Calif.) an RBI groundout as the hosts added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 6-2.

The Wildcats tacked on a run in the top of the eighth, but the comeback bid fell far short. Senior John Pfeffer (Riverside, Calif.) got the save for the Yotes, retiring both batters he faced in the top of the ninth, with one strikeout.

Shedlock was the only Coyote with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 from the lead-off spot with a run scored and a run batted in. Garcia went 1-for-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.

Reigning CCAA Pitcher of the Week Benny Olguin (Alhambra, Calif.) earned his first win of the season on the hill for the Yotes. In 5.0 innings pitched, he allowed just two runs (both unearned) on four hits with a pair of strikeouts.

Game 2 - Central Washington 3, #4 Cal State San Bernardino 0

The contest started as a pitcher's duel before Central Washington finally got the bats going in the top of the sixth inning.

Sophomore pitcher Carter Herrera (Yucaipa, Calif.) got through the first five innings without allowing a hit, before the Wildcats got to him for three hits and one run in the top of the sixth.

Central Washington tacked on two more in the top of the seventh for some insurance, giving the game its final score of 3-0.

San Bernardino scattered just three hits in the seven-inning contest. Ruiz, Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.), and Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) notched the only three base hits for the Yotes.

Herrera took the loss for San Bernardino, allowing one earned on three hits over 6.0 innings pitched. He moves to 1-1 overall on the season.

The teams will wrap up their four-game set on Saturday morning with an 11 a.m. first pitch at Fiscalini Field.
