SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #4 California State University San Bernardino baseball team dropped its series opener 4-2 in 10 innings to Central Washington University Thursday evening in non-conference action at Fiscalini Field.
With the defeat, the Coyotes suffer their first loss of the 2024 season, falling to 3-1.
Central Washington scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead.
The score did not change again until the bottom of the seventh inning, when San Bernardino plated a pair to knot the score at 2-2. Junior Jason Shedlock (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) got the Yotes on the board with an RBI single to left field, before senior Riley Parker (Snohomish, Wash.) tied the game with an RBI fielder's choice.
The Coyotes came within inches of walking off the Wildcats in the bottom of the ninth when Shedlock hit a towering fly ball to right field, but barely stayed in the yard for a long single. A batter later, the Yotes grounded into an inning-ending double play, closing the door on an opportunity to finish off the come-from-behind victory.
Central Washington took the lead in the top of the 10th on a wild pitch, and added some insurance on an opposite field solo home run from Ben Leid. The Yotes went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to end the contest.
Shedlock went 4-for-5 in the lead-off spot for the hosts, but the rest of the team combined to go just 4-for-35 in the loss. Junior Adrian Hinojosa (Chula Vista, Calif.) was the only other Coyote with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
Despite 4.2 quality relief innings, junior Devyn Hernandez (Pasco, Wash.) took the loss for the Yotes. He allowed two earned runs, both in the top of the 10th inning, while striking out seven in the defeat. He moves to 1-1 on the season.
The teams will continue their four-series on Friday afternoon with a doubleheader at Fiscalini Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
