SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team defeated Hawaii Pacific University 11-3 in five innings in their home opener Saturday morning at the CSUSB Softball Field.
With the win, the Coyotes pick up their second win of the young season, improving to 2-0 overall.
The Yotes put up a three-spot in the bottom of the first inning to take control of the contest from the outset.
Shannon Galliano (San Mateo, Calif.) and
Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) each had RBI singles in the inning, while
Bri Goris (Chino, Calif.) recorded her first RBI of the season with a sacrifice fly to right field.
CSUSB broke the contest open in the bottom of the third with five runs to go ahead 8-0. Junior
Tereise Tosi (Garden Grove, Calif.) led off the inning with a lead-off home run over the center field fence, and recorded another RBI on a bases loaded walk later in the frame. In between, Emilie Lapeña (Buena Park, Calif.) and Goris notched RBI singles, while
Lindsey Marschall (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) recorded a pinch-hit RBI sacrifice fly.
Galliano and Tosi had RBI singles in the bottom of the fourth as the Yotes scored three more times to go ahead 11-0. The Sharks answered with three runs in the top of the fifth, but it was not enough to extend the contest, as CSUSB closed out the victory.
Galliano, Tosi, Escujuri, and Lapeña all recorded a pair of hits at the plate for the Yotes, with Tosi and Goris each driving in three runs.
In the circle, junior
Brooke Blackmon (Exeter, Calif.) was dominant, earning her first victory of the season with four shutout innings, allowing just two hits.
The Yotes will be right back in action this afternoon, hosting Montana State Billings at 2:30 p.m.
