POMONA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team closed out its 2023-24 regular season with a 92-69 loss to Cal Poly Pomona Thursday evening in CCAA action at Kellogg Arena.
With the defeat, the Coyotes move to 14-13 overall and finish out league play at 12-10.
The Broncos took over the contest in the first quarter and never looked back, outpacing CSUSBÂ 27-11 in the first 10 minutes. The Yotes hit just five of their 17 field goal attempts (29.4 percent) in the first quarter, while Cal Poly Pomona shot 62.5 percent on 10-of-16 shooting.
Cal State San Bernardino turned it around offensively in the second, pouring in 25 points to cut the deficit to 48-36 by halftime. Reigning D2CIDA Division II Player of the Week
Destiny Jackson (Hayward, Calif.) led the Coyotes with eight points in the half, while freshmen
Jaushlynn Ruffin (Lynwood, Calif.) and
Citlali Salazar (Watts, Calif.) each scored seven.
The third quarter featured a nearly identical scoreline as the first, as Cal Poly Pomona outscored the Coyotes 26-11 to take a commanding 74-47 lead into the final quarter.
CSUSBÂ bested Cal Poly Pomona 22-18 in the fourth, but the damage was done from the first three quarters as the Broncos secured the win to close out their regular season.
Jackson finished as CSUSB's leading scorer with 14 points. Ruffin, Salazar, and junior
Olivia Lee (Peoria, Ariz.) each had 11 points for the Coyotes in the defeat.
Both teams will continue their season next Thursday in the quarterfinals of the CCAA Tournament at CSUSB's Coussoulis Arena. The Coyotes have wrapped up the five-seed and will play Cal State Los Angeles in the first round.
