SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The #24 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team clinched a spot in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament with a 64-54 win over San Francisco State Thursday evening in CCAA action at the Main Gym at Don Nasser Family Plaza.
With the victory, the Coyotes improve to 19-5 overall on the season, and 14-4 in the CCAA. With a Cal State Los Angeles loss to Sonoma State, the Yotes now find themselves in sole possession of second place in the conference.
The first half was all Coyotes, as the visitors outpaced the Gators by a margin of 37-21. The Yotes were led by eight points from senior Sedrick Altman (Rialto, Calif.), but the story of the half was the San Bernardino defense. CSUSB held San Francisco State to just 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from the floor in the half and 1-for-12 from three (8.3 percent).
San Francisco State mounted a small comeback, but never closed the gap to less than nine points as the Coyotes clinched the postseason berth. Altman and classmate Robby Robinson (San Diego, Calif.) each posted eight points for the Yotes after halftime.
Cal State San Bernardino spread around the offense on Thursday night, as four of its seven scorers were in double figures. Altman led the way with 16, while Robinson recorded 13 points, six rebounds, and six assists.
San Bernardino junior Chris Mitchell (Oceanside, Calif.) posted a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double, while senior guard LeAndrew Knight (Lompoc, Calif.) notched 10 points and six steals.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will continue their road trip on Saturday at Cal State East Bay. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
