Women's Basketball Falls to #24 Cal Poly Pomona

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to #24 Cal Poly Pomona by a final score of 62-49 Saturday afternoon in the CCAA opener for both teams at Coussoulis Arena.

With the defeat, CSUSB drops to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.

CSUSB had a narrow 13-12 advantage at the end of one quarter, thanks to a 50 percent (6-of-12) shooting performance from the floor. Senior guard Deannah Buckner (Rialto, Calif.) was a perfect 3-for-3 from the floor in the quarter, including one 3-pointer, to lead all players with seven points.

The Coyote offense quieted in the second quarter, shooting just 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) for six points to fall behind 26-19 by the break. Senior Mia Dufresne (Torrance, Calif.) was a bright spot for the Yotes in the quarter, with four points, six boards, and two blocks.

The Coyotes went on a 10-0 run early in the third quarter to take their first lead since the first, and carried a 39-37 lead to the fourth and final frame. CSUSB shot an identical mark that they did in the first quarter at 6-of-12, led by nine points from graduate student Jaida Jackson (Moreno Valley, Calif.).

The Broncos climbed back into the contest by holding the Yotes to just 3-of-15 shooting, while outscoring the hosts 25-10. On top of shooting 6-for-10 (60.0 percent) from the floor in the fourth, the visitors went 12-of-16 (75.0 percent) from the free throw line to help secure the come-from-behind win.

Four Coyotes finished the contest in double figures, led by a huge outing from Jackson. She finished the afternoon with a team-high 14 points, as well as five steals and five assists. Dufresne and graduate student Lauryn Morris (Irvine, Calif.) each had 10-point double-doubles, posting 14 and 12 rebounds respectively, while Buckner had 10 points of her own.

Next up for the Yotes, they will head on the road for a CCAA contest against Sonoma State on Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m.
