#5 Men's Basketball Knocks Off CUI

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #5 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team defeated Concordia University Irvine 68-64 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at Coussoulis Arena.

With the victory, CSUSB wins its seventh consecutive game and improves to 7-1 overall on the season.

CSUSB ran out to a big early lead, leading by as many as 14 after an Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) layup put the Coyotes ahead 22-8 just over nine minutes into the contest. The Golden Eagles narrowed the lead to seven in the waning stages of the first half, but Charlie Henderson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) hit a floater in the paint off an inbound play at the horn to give the hosts a 36-25 lead heading into the break.

CUI used a 7-0 run midway through the second half to cut the deficit all the way down to four at 49-45, but a free throw by senior Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.) stopped the skid with 7:32 to play. The Yotes would build their lead all the way back up to 11 at 60-49 after a Giordan Williams (Carson, Calif.) bucket, but couldn't get away from the Golden Eagles.

Eventually CUI would work their way to within two after a three ball in the final minute, but a pair of clutch free throws from senior Camren Pierce (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) put the contest to bed with 21 seconds to play.

Four Coyotes finished the contest in double figures, led by 17 points and eight boards from senior guard Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.). Williams had 16 points of his own on 6-for-9 shooting, while Charlie Henderson posted 14 points and eight rebounds. Oliver posted 12 points and a game-high seven assists in the win for CSUSB.

The Coyotes will return to action on Saturday, opening CCAA play against Cal Poly Pomona at Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
