SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The #5 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball fell 67-62 to Cal Poly Pomona in its CCAA opener Saturday afternoon at Coussoulis Arena.
With the defeat, CSUSB sees its seven-game win streak come to an end, moving to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the CCAA.
The Coyotes took a five-point lead into the locker room after a low-scoring 32-27 first half. Graduate student Giordan Williams (Carson, Calif.) scored a team-high 10 first half points for the Yotes. Classmate Evan Oliver (San Bernardino, Calif.) had six points in the half with a pair of triples, as well as two assists and two steals.
After Williams opened the second half with a lay-in to put the Yotes ahead by seven at 34-27, Cal Poly Pomona answered with an 11-3 run to go ahead 38-37 four and a half minutes into the second half.Â
The lead would flip back and forth over the next five minutes of action, until an 11-2 Bronco run gave the visitors a 55-49 lead with 7:47 to play, and they would never trail again. The Coyotes became reliant on the three-ball in the final seven minutes after relinquishing the lead, but hit just 3-of-10 (30.0 percent) in the effort to climb back into the game.
Williams finished as CSUSB's leading scorer, posting 19 points in the defeat. Oliver and senior Charlie Henderson (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) each scored 10 points.
Next up for the Coyotes, they will head on the road for a CCAA contest against Sonoma State on Thursday evening. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m.
