Women's Volleyball Stopped Short by Cal State LA in First Round of CCAA Tournament

POMONA, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team fell 3-2 Thursday night in the first round of the CCAA Tournament at Kellogg Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 19-25, 20-25, 29-27, and 15-9.

With the defeat, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 15-11 overall on the season. The Coyotes will await the NCAA Selection Show on Monday to see if they earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

CSUSB struggled offensively in set number one, recording only six kills and an attack percentage of .036 on the way to falling behind 1-0. Senior Ashley Robinson (Tucson, Ariz.) had two kills, a service ace, and a solo block in the set for the Yotes, while Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.) had two kills on two attempts.

The Coyotes bounced back in set number two, going wire-to-wire to level the match. CSUSB scored the first four points of the set and never looked back, with 12 kills and only two errors for an attack percentage of .385 in the set. Sophomore Allison Legates (Los Altos, Calif.) had a huge set for the Yotes, notching five kills on five attempts to go along with an assisted block. Her kill at set point secured the set for the Yotes.

For the second set in a row, the Yotes never trailed in set three, pushing the Golden Eagles to the brink. Cal State San Bernardino hit only .104 in the set, but held Cal State LA to a mark of .071. Robinson was CSUSB's leader in the set with four kills and five digs, while Kylie Thomas (San Bernardino, Calif.) had five digs of her own.

The Coyotes had a pair of match points late in set four, but could not seal the deal in a tightly contested set that featured an astounding 17 ties and eight lead changes. Hoffmann led CSUSB with five kills in the set, while libero Jayden Chornomud (Murrieta, Calif.) had nine of her team-high 18 digs.

Cal State LA controlled the fifth set from the start and never allowed the Yotes to make it competitive. The Golden Eagles hit .467 in the set to close out Cal State San Bernardino. 

Hoffmann finished as CSUSB's leader offensively, posting 12 kills and two assisted blocks. Robinson had 11 kills, while Legates and junior Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.) each had nine. Robinson and Legates each had five assisted blocks and one solo block.
