SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's volleyball team 3-2 Saturday on Senior Night at Kim Cherniss Court at Coussoulis Arena. Set scores were 25-16, 18-25, 25-17, 19-25, and 15-11.
With the defeat, Cal State San Bernardino moves to 15-10 overall on the season and 11-7 in CCAA play.Â
Before the match, three Cal State San Bernardino seniors were honored as they played in their final regular season home match at Kim Cherniss Court. Ashley Robinson (Tucson, Ariz.), Savannah Hoffmann (Rialto, Calif.), and Kylie Thomas (San Bernardino, Calif, were joined on the court by their friends and family for the pregame ceremony.
CSUSB hit just .091 to the Cougars' .414 as the visitors took set number one 25-16. San Marcos led 13-4 midway through the set before the Yotes rallied back to within three at 19-16, but the Cougars responded with a 6-0 run to close out the set. Robinson had five kills in the set, but the rest of the Coyotes were held to a combined five kills.
The Yotes rebounded in set two with a 25-18 victory. Robinson posted five more kills, while sophomore M'Kera Drake (San Bernardino, Calif.) had four assisted blocks to level the score in the match.
The teams battled back and forth in set three, but eventually it was Cal State San Marcos that pulled away and pushed the Coyotes to the brink. The set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes, but ended on a 6-1 Cougar run. Robinson led all players with six kills in the set, and did not have an attack error.
CSUSB forced a fifth set with their strongest attacking performance of the night in set four. The Yotes hit .361 in the set, led by six kills on eight attempts from sophomore Kacie Pedersen (Riverside, Calif.), as well as six digs.
Robinson had four kills in the fifth and final set, but it was not enough as San Marcos pulled ahead early and did not look back in order to finish off the upset.
With her 23rd of 24 kills on the evening, Robinson became the 10th member of the CSUSB women's volleyball 1,000 kills club, and first new member to join since Alexis Cardoza in 2019.
Pedersen and junior Jordan Cherniss (Colton, Calif.) also reached double figures in kills on the evening, posting 13 and 10 respectively. Pedersen had a career-high 19 digs to lead all players defensively.
The Coyotes finish CCAA play as the five-seed and will begin CCAA Tournament play on Thursday when they take on fourth-seeded Cal State Los Angeles. First serve from Cal Poly Pomona is slated for 5:30 p.m.
