LA MIRADA, Calif. - The #11 California State University San Bernardino men's basketball team defeated Biola University Thursday evening at Chase Gymnasium by a final score of 68-63.
With the win, CSUSB moves to 5-1 on the season.
The Coyotes started off with a balanced attack with five Yotes responsible for the team's first 18 points. Senior Nic Welp (Seattle, Wash.) was one of those five, and his three-pointer at the 12:10 mark made in 18-12. Welp was one rebound shy of a double-double, as he scored 10 points and a season-high nine boards. CSUSB led by as many as eight in the first half and the score was 32-31 at halftime.
In the second half, things were back-and-forth, with neither team up by more than five points until midway through the period. Biola held their last lead at 46-45 with 12:36 left before CSUSB went on a 13-0 over the next five minutes to take their largest lead of the game at 58-46. Graduate Student Giordan Williams (Carson, Calif.) added a pair of buckets during the run. He ended the contest with a game-high 23 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field, which ties his career high.
Biola came back to make it 64-63 with less than a minute remaining. However, a pair of free throws by seniors Evan Guillory (Springfield, Mo.) and Andrew Henderson (Chatsworth, Calif.) iced the game.
Despite Biola winning the battle on the glass 38-35, the Yotes were able to force 20 Biola turnovers, which is the third time this season that CSUSB has forced 20 or more turnovers. Additionally, the Coyotes scored 10 second chance points compared to the Eagles' three.
Next up, the Coyotes will take on the #6 Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions Saturday in Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
