SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Yotes pulled off an impressive come-from-behind win on Thursday afternoon, scoring two goals in the final 20 minutes to stump Concordia University Irvine by a final score of 3-2. With the win, #21 CSUSB improves to 3-0-2 overall and remains without a loss on the season. The Yotes are now 9-2-5 in non-conference games during
Josh Hill's three-year tenure as head coach, and are 7-0-4 in the last two seasons alone.
"Today was a good result at home. We have been on the road for a while and it was nice to see the boys come together and fight for one another," said Hill. "We are still growing as a team and it takes the whole roster to piece wins together."
Â
The game remained scoreless for the majority of the first half, until CUI netted the first goal of the game in the 40
th minute of play. Just two minutes later, Yotes captain
Travis Babineau scored his first goal of the season to even the game back up at 1-1.
Jonathan Mayen earned his third assist of the season on the goal.
Â
In the second half, CUI reclaimed the lead on a penalty kick goal in the 59
th minute. Down 2-1 headed into the final 20 minutes of play,
Nicklaus Sullivan crossed the ball into the box for junior forward
Brian Castillo, who tapped it past the keeper for his fourth consecutive game with a goal. That was also Sullivan's CCAA-leading fifth assist of the season.
Â
With the score now evened back up at 2-2, Sullivan once again came up big for the Yotes with a banger over a leaping keeper to give CSUSB a late lead in the 82
nd minute. With the goal and the assist, Sullivan is now tied for first in the CCAA in points with nine on the season.
"We have some strong leadership and our group is built for tough moments," added Hill. "We saw a lot of players step up today; from our GK with his first start, to all of the guys in the front line creating positive moments on both sides of the ball. The team had some consistent players and although some things didn't go to plan, we are seeing progress and the team is consistently improving. Still things to learn from, but happy to see how the team rally's together in tough moments."
