CARY, NC – The CSUSB baseball team fell to Rollins College on Saturday afternoon by a score of 7-1 in their first-ever NCAA DII College World Series game. Because Division II honors a true double elimination format all the way through the tournament, the Yotes will need to win every remaining game in order to hold up the trophy next Saturday. With the loss, CSUSB now owns a 43-18 record on the season.
Â
The Yotes' bats were stumped by the Tars' starting pitcher Berger, allowing him to go seven scoreless innings while surrendering just three hits. Those three hits were all singles off the bats of
DeShawn Johnson in the third inning, as well as both
Danny Garcia and
Garrett Macias in the seventh inning. Despite managing to get four runners in scoring position, the Yotes were unable to capitalize on the opportunities to keep the game within reach.
Â
Then in the top of the ninth inning, a series of pinch hitters proved to be a success as back-to-back singles by
Ben Davidson and
Jeremy Giesegh pushed across
Jake Borst for CSUSB's lone run of the game. Giesegh collected the RBI, his 17
th of the season.
Â
The Yotes' one run scored on Saturday was very uncharacteristic, as their relentless offense has been a driving force behind their success all season. The last time they were limited to just one run was all the way back on March 26
th when they lost in a walk-off thriller at Cal Poly Pomona. By scoring that lone run in the top of the ninth inning against the Tars, the Yotes kept their streak alive of scoring at least one run in every single game this season.
Â
Senior
Austyn Coleman started the game on the mound for CSUSB, and was met by powerful bats in the Rollins lineup. Coleman was bit by the long ball on three separate occasions, giving Rollins an early 5-0 lead through the first three innings. Coleman finished with four strikeouts and five runs allowed on seven hits, taking just his second loss of the season.
Â
Josh Sandoval minimized the damage out of the pen, throwing two scoreless innings while the CSUSB offense tried to get going. In the sixth, Rollins scored two runs on two hits to take a 7-0 lead.
Conner Batzer and
John Pfeffer delivered two scoreless innings in the seventh and eighth, allowing just one combined hit.
