CARY, NC – The CSUSB baseball team claimed their first DII World Series win on Monday afternoon, defeating University of Indianapolis by a score of 10-8 in an elimination game. It was also their first World Series win in over 32 years, as the last time the Yotes won on the big stage was May 23
rd, 1991 against Methodist in the DIII College World Series.
Â
Unlike the game on Saturday against Rollins, the bats came out hot in the elimination game against the Greyhounds, collecting 10 runs on 14 hits.
DeShawn Johnson and
Giovanni Del Negro once again led the offensive charge - each collecting two singles and one extra base hit while both scoring twice and both driving in two RBI. Seven different Yotes collected at least one hit in the game, while
Jason Shedlock,
Garrett Macias, and
Riley Parker each had two.
Â
The Yotes gained an early lead in the third inning, plating six runs on five hits to take a commanding lead on UIndy. After giving up two in the fourth, CSUSB added on three more in the sixth to make the game 9-2 in favor of the Yotes. Each team would add a run in the seventh to make the score 10-3. Then came the bottom of the ninth…
Â
The Yotes took their seven-run lead for granted, immediately loading the bases and allowing a run to score with no outs to bring the game to 10-4. A ground ball double play would quickly give CSUSB two big outs, but it would allow another run to come across and make it 10-5. Two batters later, the Greyhounds hit a pivotal three-run home run to left field, narrowing the lead to 10-8 and building anxiety in the CSUSB dugout.
Â
The next batter would be hit by a pitch, forcing head coach
Mike Nadeau to bring in CSUSB's all-time saves leader
Oscar Rauda from the pen. Rauda walked his first batter, putting the tying run on first and the winning run at the plate. With a 2-1 count, Rauda forced a ground ball to second base to slam the door shut and pick up his 14
th save of the season.
Â
Dylan O'Connor got the start on the mound for the Yotes, delivering five strong innings to pick up his ninth win of the season. The junior struck out three batters while allowing two earned runs and zero walks on 79 pitches.
Benny Olguin also had an impressive performance out of the pen, surrendering just two hits and one run in 3.0 innings of work.
