LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team took the final game of the rain-delayed series against Cal State LA, defeating them on Tuesday by a final score of 12-8. With the win, the Yotes tie the 2001 team at 33 for the second-most wins in a season in program history. With one more, they will tie the program record.
Â
The Yotes had quite an unconventional day on the mound, using seven pitchers en route to the win.
Dylan O'Connor, who had only started games entering Tuesday, picked up his sixth win of the season after throwing two scoreless innings from the pen.
Nate Mendoza and
Conner Batzer also each threw two scoreless innings out of the pen, helping keep the Yotes within reach while trailing.
Â
DeShawn Johnson led the offensive charge, going 3-4 while scoring three runs. Over the course of the prolonged LA series, Johnson went 7-15 with eight runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and six walks in the four games.
Daryl Ruiz also played a big role in the win, going 2-4 with a two-run home run in the seventh and a two-run double in the ninth. Although Ruiz didn't get credit for an RBI in the eighth, his double play groundout pushed across the tying run to even the game at 7-7.
Â
Freshman
Jeremy Giesegh also provided a clutch swing, going deep to right center in the top of the seventh inning to bring the game within one. That was Giesegh's fourth home run of the season, while he owns a .314 average on the season.
Â
After trailing 7-2 through the first six innings, the Yotes turned it into high gear and plated 10 more runs over the final three frames. This would help them secure a win in the final game of the delayed CSULA series, earning them their 9th series win of the season.
