CHICO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team picked up their 30
th win of the season on Friday night, becoming just the fifth team in program history to reach that mark. The Yotes tie the 1990 and 2004 squads as the third team to reach exactly 30 wins. They are now in the hunt for the program record for most wins in a season, which currently belongs to the 2002 team that went 34-24 in their CCAA Tournament title run. In addition to their 30-12 overall record this season, CSUSB also sits 3.5 games back in the CCAA standings with a 21-11 conference record.
Â
The Yotes came out swinging in Chico, immediately putting three runs on the board in the top of the first inning.
DeShawn Johnson got the ball rolling with a double down the left field line, his team-leading 12
th double of the season. Three walks would load the bases and allow a run to score, bringing up
Jake Borst. With a 2-2 count, Borst doubled down the left field line driving in two more runs, giving the Yotes an early 3-0 lead.
Â
Things would remain quiet for the next few innings until both teams scored one run in the fourth.
Jason Shedlock scored for the Yotes in the top of the frame after doubling to lead off the inning. Shedlock finished the game 2-5 and owns a .345 average on the season. Then in the seventh inning, CSUSB broke the game open scoring four runs on five consecutive singles. This gave the Yotes a commanding 8-1 lead.
Â
Junior starting pitcher
Luke Hempel delivered one of his better starts of the season, allowing just one run to score in 6.1 innings on the mound. Though he allowed six hits and six free passes, Hempel did a good job at minimizing big situations to keep the Wildcat bats from cashing in. After picking up the win, Hempel improves to 6-2 on the season.
Â
John Pfeffer relieved Hempel in a jam, but needed just two pitches to get a ground ball double play to end the inning.
Chris Hernandez and
Andrick Jones each threw an inning to close out the game, combining to allow just one hit and one run with three strikeouts.
