Yotes Snap Otters’ Win Streak in Doubleheader Split

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team split their doubleheader with Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday, moving to 28-11 on the season and 19-10 in conference. The Yotes picked up the win in game one of the doubleheader, breaking CSUMB's 14-game win streak – which was the second longest in all of NCAA Division II. Despite dropping two games in the series thus far, the Yotes actually gained some separation from Cal Poly Pomona and now sit 3.5 games ahead of third place in the conference standings.

The Yotes also earned their 28th win of the season on Saturday, tying them for seventh-most in program history. The current win record belongs to the 2002 team that went 34-24, so this year's team have put themselves in a favorable position to break the program record - should they continue at their current pace.

Game 1: CSUSB 6, CSUMB 2
CSUSB took game one of the doubleheader, led by solid pitching that held the Otters to just two runs on four hits. Josh Sandoval, Benny Olguin, and John Pfeffer struck out a combined 10 batters while walking three. Olguin picked up his sixth win of the season, remaining perfect with a 6-0 record.

The top five hitters of the Yotes' lineup continued to see the ball well, collecting seven of the team's eight hits. DeShawn Johnson and Garrett Macias each collected two hits, while Giovanni Del Negro hit the only home run of the day for CSUSB. That was his 10th long ball of the season, tying him with Daryl Ruiz for the most on both the team, and in the CCAA.

Game 2: CSUSB 6, CSUMB 14 (7 innings)
Just like the first game of the series, the Yotes were bit by a costly big inning early on. In the top of the fourth, CSUSB allowed nine runs to score to give CSUMB a commanding 12-0 lead. The Yotes responded with five hits and five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, but it wasn't enough to get them back in the game. Daryl Ruiz and Jake Borst each collected multiple hits in the game, while Ruiz, Johnson, and Riley Parker each doubled.

With the loss, Dylan O'Connor fell to 5-4 on the season after allowing five earned runs in 3.0 innings. Conner Batzer and Dylan Silver each allowed two earned runs in the remaining four innings out of the pen.
