SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team defeated Cal State San Marcos in their series opener on Friday, winning by a score of 10-5. With the win, the No. 5 Yotes improve to 10-1 on the season and a perfect 9-0 at home.
Â
With last week's games against CSULA being postponed due to weather, Friday's win counted as their first of CCAA play – making CSUSB 1-0 in conference play this season.
Â
DeShawn Johnson has been unstoppable this season, going 4-for-5 against the Cougars to improve his season batting average to an incredible .538. Entering the weekend, Johnson ranked top 30 in the nation in batting average at .500. He also led CSUSB with three runs scored in the win over CSUSM.
Â
Both
Garrett Macias and
Giovanni Del Negro came up clutch at the plate, each driving in three RBI to help the Yotes gain some much needed separation at different points in the game. In the third inning, Macias came up to the plate with the bases loaded. After already hitting two grand slams earlier this season and becoming the face of Slam Bernardino, Macias roped a ball to deep left field that hit off the wall a few feet short of his third grand slam – bringing in all three runners.
Â
Former CCAA Player of the Week
Daryl Ruiz had the swing of the game, however, when he came up to the plate with one runner on in a tie game in the seventh inning. After fouling off three straight pitches with a full count, Ruiz launched a ball to the left of the scoreboard for his fifth home run of the season. This gave the Yotes a 7-5 lead, one they would hang onto for the rest of the game to remain undefeated at home.
