TURLOCK, Calif. – The Yotes grabbed their first series win during conference play this past weekend against the Warriors of Stanislaus. After going 2-0 on Saturday, the Yotes split their doubleheaders on Sunday, with junior
Natalie Carlos picking up her second shutout of the season.
Game 1: CSUSB 4, STAN 5
The Yotes dropped the first and only game of the series despite taking the 2-0 lead in the second inning.
Alexis Aguado would give herself an RBI on a single down the left field line to bring in Arianna Chavarria.
Hayden Greene doubled on the same side of the field, also getting an RBI when
Veronica Garza came in to score. Greene has now recorded hits in each of the last five games and hit for .393 in her four appearances at the plate.
Stanislaus State put their first point on the board after scoring an unearned run on an error by the Yotes.
Samantha Vargas walked two batters to load the bases and bring in another unearned run. A single to shortstop would advance all runners and after a batter was hit-by-pitch, two Warriors came in to score.
Neither team would score again until the seventh inning.
Tereise Tosi, this week's CCAA Softball Player of the Week, hit a single and earned two RBIs as Greene and
Shaylee Zaitz came in to tie the game.
It looked like Yotes might take the Warriors to extra innings when the Yotes were ahead with two outs and a 1-2 count in the box. The base runner on second was waived home on a single up the middle and scored on a ball that was just short of making a the out.
Samantha Vargas was in the circle almost the entirety of the game for the Yotes. She was handed the loss and brings her record to 8-7. The junior, who has been an ace for the Yotes all season, had four errors and nine hits in the 30 at-bats of the game.
Game 2: CSUSB 5, STAN 0
Natalie Carlos wanted a piece of the shutout talk. She was in the circle the full seven innings of the second game of the afternoon, marking only her second time this season that she's pitched a full game. Carlos allowed four hits in 26 batters and put up two strikeouts.
The Yotes bounced back from their early-afternoon loss. They recorded 10 hits on the afternoon, five coming in the first four innings. Tosi put the Yotes on the board first again with a double to left field to bring
Alyssa Rodriguez in to score.
Alyssa Martinez singled through the left side in the top of the fourth and rounded the bases on a double from Chavarria, putting the Yotes up 2-0.
They would tack on two more points with a double by Tosi. Chavarria walked in the top of the sixth with Aguado coming in to pinch run. Aguado, the team leader in stolen bases this season, would add another to her stats when she put herself in scoring position after stealing second on the first pitch of Garza's at-bat. A single from
Shaylee Zaitz would bring Aguado across home plate and solidify the Yotes' win.
