Yotes Stun Eagles in 7th Inning Comeback

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Yotes traveled to Biola University on Monday to finish out their non-conference schedule. This doubleheader series marks the first time the Yotes and the Eagles have faced each other, and they made sure to make it memorable.

Game 1: CSUSB 1, BU 3

The Yotes had some good looks to score early, but it was the Eagles who took advantage of a base hit and got on the board first, ending a three-inning drought for both teams. Brooke Brazill's diving play to end the inning would strand three runners on base.

Tereise Tosi doubled to left field to start the fourth inning, her third of the season. Alyssa Martinez also followed up with a double to match Tosi for three doubles this season. Her double would bring pinch runner Kyla Lowman across home plate to tie the game. The Eagles would regain the lead on an RBI double and loaded the bases for the second time in the ballgame with the next batter. A single to right field brought another runner in and would put the Eagles up 3-1.

The remainder of the game was scoreless, both teams unable to put together enough pieces to bring in any additional runs. Martinez led the Yotes with three hits in three appearances at the plate. The senior infielder bat for a .296 average, her fourth highest average so far this season.

Game 2: CSUSB 7, BU 6

Shannon Galliano got on base first for the Yotes with a double to right center field. Adding two RBIs to her season total was Tosi who hit a 2-run homerun to right field. The Eagles weren't far behind and put one on the board in the bottom of the inning. After three quick plate appearances, the game moved to the bottom of the second.

The Yotes watched their 2-1 lead quickly turn into them being down 4-2 after a pair of walks, a double and a single to bring three runners into score. Alexis Aguado, who leads the team in batting average (.448),  bat first in the top of the third and got on base with a single to left center. A sacrifice bunt from Galliano allowed Aguado to advance to scoring position and she would be the third run on the board for the Yotes after a single from Bailey Wallace.

A one-run homer by Martinez in the fifth inning kept the Yotes in the game, but they were still down 4-6. With their backs against the wall, the Yotes found an opening with a pair of singles and a walk to advance two runners to scoring position.

Down to their final out with the bases loaded, Natalie Carlos stepped up to the plate and battled. On a 1-2 count, she laced one straight into deep center field. The Yotes cleared the bases, waiving Ariana Chavarria home to score the go-ahead run on a wild relay throw home by the Eagles. Carlos' hit gave the Yotes the lead and a final score of 7-6.

Samantha Vargas and Brooklyn Blackmon continue to be a force on the mound for the Yotes. In their combined efforts today, they allowed seven total RBIs, two walks and nine strikeouts. Their win against the Eagles tied the Yotes second highest average (.367) this season.
