An early jump offensively for the APU Cougars put them ahead 2-0 and their defense backed it up throughout the remainder of the game, leaving the Yotes scoreless.
Strong pitching from the Cougars stumped the Yotes for the first game of the afternoon. They put up five total hits across the board and left seven runners on base.
The Yotes stayed in the game defensively. They recorded 10 groundouts and six flyouts, but couldn't match that energy on the offensive end.
Samantha Vargas pitched 6 innings for the Yotes. This loss brings her overall record to 2-2.
Game 2: CSUSB 8, APU 3
Again, the Cougars struck first in the first inning on a sac-fly to center field. The Yotes were determined to pull out a win this afternoon. A single from
Kaylee Williamson started the rally for the team. Quick-thinking and fast feet allowed her to advance to second on the next passed ball. Another single from
Alyssa Martinez and would score the tying run after Williamson was thrown out.
Two additional runs came for the Yotes in the top of third.
Shannon Galliano singled to get on base, later scoring on a throwing error by the pitcher.
Tereise Tosi scored the second run for the Yotes, but the inning would end with
Ariana Chavarria striking out.
APU put one more run on the board in the bottom of the sixth on a throwing error. Undeterred, the Yotes kept swinging and would put up six more runs throughout the night.
Six Yotes made their way across home plate in the 8-3 win. Martinez and Tosi each went for two a piece, Tosi's solo homerun in the fifth marking the first of the season for the team.
Shannon Galliano,
Shaylee Zaitz,
Hayden Greene and
Veronica Garza all coming across with one run each.
Brooklyn Blackmon was on the mound the entirety of the game. In the 33 batters she faced she only allowed eight hits and gave up two walks. Her record is now 1-2. Coach
Dee Payan is looking forward to the season the Yotes have ahead of them, saying:
"Sam Vargas and Brooke Blackmon have been holding it down for us in the circle. They both have been performing well and keeping us in the games long enough for us to win. They continue to get better with each outing and it's been really fun watching them compete. Offensively, we need to do a better job of having their back by putting up runs early and often. Our team has been working extremely hard this week to prepare and are looking forward for our games tomorrow."
