Yotes Set Program Record in Sweep Over Saints

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB baseball team defeated Saint Martin's on Sunday afternoon by a score of 8-4, setting a program record with their seventh consecutive win to open the season. The previous record had been six straight wins to start the season, set in both the 1989 and 2003 seasons. The Yotes also opened the 1988 season playing nine consecutive games without a loss, however that stretch included a tie.

Senior Austyn Coleman delivered a strong start on the mound for the Yotes, not allowing a run until the sixth inning. The Fontana native got out to a quick start, striking out the side in the first inning. Coleman would go on to fan nine batters in the game while not allowing a single free pass, ultimately walking away with his second win of the season. This was also Coleman's 11th career win, which put him into the CSUSB record book tied for fifth most in program history.

Contrary to the incredible offensive showing the Yotes' had displayed in the first three games of the series, they were out-hit by the Saints on Sunday. Seven different CSUSB batters recorded one hit in the 8-4 win, while seven batters also scored at least one run. Riley Parker was the only player to score multiple times in the game.

Deshawn Johnson continued his impressive performance at the plate, driving in three of the Yotes' eight runs on a double and a sacrifice fly. Daryl Ruiz also recorded 2 RBI on his third home run of the year that was hammered just inside the right field foul pole in the second inning.

The Yotes' secured the win and the series sweep, outscoring the Saints an impressive 40-16 on the weekend.

Super Bowl Sunday
As many sports fans were aware, Sunday also featured Super Bowl LVII. Including the Yotes' win on Sunday, CSUSB baseball holds a 3-4 all-time record on Super Bowl Sundays. This includes three contests on the road, with the last four taking place at home. The first game that coincided with a Super Bowl occurred in 2004, when CSUSB defeated Cal Poly Pomona by a score of 10-3. The most recent took place last season, when CSUSB fell to Central Washington in a 14 inning thriller. In total, CSUSB falls just short of their opponents in runs scored at 41-44 on days when "The Big Game" is on television.
