Hot Shooting and Defense Propel No. 14 Yotes to 20th Win

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The CSUSB Yotes played team ball on both sides of the court on Saturday afternoon, defeating San Francisco State 99-60 in The Den. The win was also their 20th of the year, making it the third consecutive season that head coach Andy Newman has amassed such a feat. It also marks the 18th time in their 38-season history that the Yotes have crossed the 20-win threshold.

Dontrell Shuler led the Yotes with 24 points on 10-for-17 (.588) shooting, but in typical CSUSB fashion, the win was a team effort. Darius Mickens scored a season-high 20 points on 8-for-14 shooting (.571), recorded 11 rebounds, and a team-high eight assists. Additionally, he made four three-pointers, the most he has made in a single game in a CSUSB uniform. Mickens and Robby Robinson, who also collected 11 boards to go along with eight points, are first and second in the CCAA, respectively, in rebounds per game at 8.6 and 8.4. Eddie Davis scored 16 points and recorded six rebounds, while Elijah Hardy had 11 points, four rebounds, and five assists. The Yotes also made five dunks, with Davis, Mickens, Sedrick Altman, and Mahmoud Fofana each recording at least one slam.

From a team standpoint, the Yotes recorded 24 assists, just two off the season-high against Cal State Dominguez Hills, which also took place at The Den. Typical of CSUSB, the team crashed the glass, recording 45 rebounds and posting a +15 rebounding margin. As of February 9th, CSUSB led all of Division II with a +15.8 rebounding margin. Offensively, the Yotes shot an impressive 40-for-70 (.571) percent as a team, and their 11-for-19 (.579) mark from behind the arc was the highest percentage the team has shot since they went 15-for-23 (.652) last season in the CCAA tournament semifinal. And finally, CSUSB tied a season-high with 11 steals and allowed just 60 points, the second-lowest of the season.
