YOTES’ FAST 2ND-HALF START LEADS TO 72-57 CCAA WIN OVER GATORS

SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State San Bernardino broke open a tight CCAA women’s basketball contest with San Francisco State by outscoring the Gators 13-2 early in the third period in route to a 72-57 victory Saturday in Coussoulis Arena.

SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State San Bernardino broke open a tight CCAA women's basketball contest with San Francisco State by outscoring the Gators 13-2 early in the third period in route to a 72-57 victory Saturday in Coussoulis Arena.
            
The win evened the Yotes season record at 4-4 and their conference record at 2-2 after beating Cal State East Bay by nearly the same score, 71-57, on Thursday night.
            
The Gators, playing without 5-10 transfer Sage Bridges-Bay (13.0 points per game), fell to 2-6 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA.
            
CSUSB senior Destiny Jackson, the leading scorer in the CCAA entering play this week at 17.4 points a game, scored a game-high 18 points along with six rebounds, six assists and five steals to lead the Yotes. Jackson scored 19 in Thursday's win.
            
Redshirt junior Jaida Jackson collected 13 points , dished off six assists and made two steals while 6-foot-1-inch forward-center Mia Dufresne posted a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds with two assists, two steals and a blocked shot, giving her 14 blocks so far this season.
            
Auren Isaacson added eight points, two rebounds and two assists while Samantha Henley contributed seven points, hitting two three-pointers. Freshman Jaushlynn Ruffin had eight rebounds to go with five points.
            
SFSU took an early 13-6 lead in the first quarter and equaled that seven-point advantage to 19-12 with 2:08 left in the period on a layup by Brilonnie Bell off an assist by the Gators leading scorer Alexsandra Alvarado.
            
The Yotes rallied to trail by one 19-18 by the end of the quarter.
            
CSUSB trailed by two points, 27-25,  late in the second period when Destiny Jackson was fouled while making a layup and made the free throw for a 28-27 Yotes lead. Then Jaida Jackson scored off an assist by Destiny Jackson for a 30-27 advantage. A free throw by Henley and a layup by Olivia Lee eight seconds before halftime give the Yotes a 33-29 halftime lead.
            
The Yotes started the third quarter on a 13-2 run in the first 4;44, capped by back-to-back layups by Jaida Jackson, Auren Isaacson and Destiny Jackson for a 46-31 lead. Destiny Jackson's layup with 28 seconds left in the period put CSUSB up 54-40 heading to the final 10-minute period.
            
Henley's three-pointer with 6:39 left in the game gave the Yotes their biggest lead of the day, 64-43.
            
The Yotes had their best shooting game of the season, hitting 51.8 percent of their field goals (29 of 56) and outrebounding the Gators 38-26. SFSU shot 39 percent from the field. Alvarado led the Gators with 15 points, making nine of 12 free throws with five assists and four steals. The Gators  had 12 steals is in the game, CSUSB had 13.
            
CSUSB leads the all-time series between the two teams 33-21 and have a 22-6 edge over the Gators at home. The Yotes have won four of the last five meetings.
 
UP NEXT: The Yotes will host Western Washington University at 1  p.m. on Dec. 18 an a inter-conference game then return to CCAA action on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m. against rival Cal Poly Pomona. Both games will be in Coussoulis
