SEASIDE – Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay combined for 24 shots in Friday night's CCAA conference match, but only one of them got past the goalkeeper to give the 22nd-ranked Otters a 1-0 victory.

The loss was the fourth straight by the Yotes in conference play and the fourth straight time they've been shut out as their 2023 record slipped to 5-5-3 overall and 2-4-1 in the CCAA.

The Otters improved to 9-2-3 on the season and 5-1-1 in CCAA play.

The difference in the game came in the 59th minute as junior midfielder Janos Kommerling of Dusseldorf, Germany finished off a pass from Roberto Barnegas into the high center of the net against Yotes goalkeeper John Samano.

Samano faced 11 shots by the Otters and saved three shots on goal in the 90-minute match.  His counterpart, sophomore Jack Blickenstaff, faced 13 shots – eight of them in the second half and stopped three that required saving.

The Yotes move on to San Francisco State for a 2 p.m. match Sunday against the Gators in an attempt to reverse the losing streak.

CSUSB had plenty of chances to get the equalizer, particularly in the second half.

Thirty seconds into the second period, Brian Castillo's shot went left of the goal. In the 63rd minute, Victor Chavez' try was left of the net. In the 72nd minute, one of five shots tried by Nicklaus Sullivan missed to the right.

Sullivan was credited with five shots in the match, Castillo four, Babineau two and one each by Negrete and Chavez.

It was the Yotes' third straight loss to Monterey Bay and the Otters now lead the series 9-5 with three ties since 2007 and 6-2-3 over the last 11 meetingss.
