MONMOUTH, OR – The CSUSB men's basketball team defeated Central Washington University on Saturday night, improving to 2-0 on the season to finish the CCAA/GNAC Challenge undefeated.
Brandon Knapper and
Dontrell Shuler once again led the charge for the nationally-ranked CSUSB squad. Knapper, a senior from Ontario, led the team with 21 points while shooting 38 percent with two three's. Shuler, a junior from South Carolina, put up 15 points while hitting two three's himself.
Robby Robinson and
Mahmoud Fofana each gathered seven rebounds against the Wildcats, with Robinson also scoring eight points.
Neither team saw a lead more than six points in the entire second half. With just six minutes remaining in the game, the Yotes took the lead on a fast break jumper in the paint by Shuler. This put them up 56-54. After CWU tied the game shortly after, the Yotes once again took the lead on a jumper from
Eddie Davis with three minutes remaining. They would hold on to the lead for the final few minutes, ultimately coming up with the 64-61 win.
"We played two hard-fought games on the road and learned a lot about our team through adversity. We played great defensively both nights. Darius Mickens showed great senior leadership in tonight's game and helped lead us to victory. We need to continue to build off these games leading into next weekend." – Head Coach Andy Newman
