MONMOUTH, OR – The CSUSB men's basketball team defeated Western Oregon on Friday night, earning their first win in the season opener. It's deja vu all over again, as the Yotes also opened up the 2021-22 campaign with a win against Western Oregon almost exactly a year ago to the day.
Middle Tennessee State transfer
Dontrell Shuler powered the Yotes to their first win, scoring 26 points while going 5-for-8 beyond the arc. The junior also went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe while shooting 38 percent from the floor with four rebounds and two steals.
CSUSB's reigning top-scorer,
Brandon Knapper, scored 13 points – nine of which came from threes.
Darius Mickens and Robby
Robinson each contributed 12 points while collecting a combined 15 rebounds. Forward Mahmoud
Fofana gathered nine rebounds, the most of any Yote in the game.
Eddie Davis also played a big role off the bench by scoring nine points with three rebounds.
The Yotes jumped out to a commanding 14-0 lead in the first four minutes of the game and never looked back. By the end of the first half, the score sat at 37-24 in favor of the Yotes. In the second half, they were able to collect 10 second chance points – which aided in preventing the Wolves from mounting any sort of a comeback. Despite being outscored in the second half, CSUSB maintained their lead to win by a comfortable 12 points, finishing with a final score of 76-64.
